"Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay." —Barrack Obama

On February 21, 2017, the President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, signed Proclamation No. 164, declaring January 25 of every year as a Day of National Remembrance for the Heroic sacrifice of the 44 uniformed personnel of the Philippine National Police - Special Action Force (PNP-SAF).[1] This proclamation is a tribute to the 44 brave men who lost their lives while performing their duty to protect the nation from terrorism. The PNP-SAF is an elite unit of the Philippine National Police, responsible for high-risk law enforcement operations, such as counter-terrorism, and securing the nation's critical infrastructures.

The heroic sacrifice of the SAF 44 is a constant reminder of the risks that the country's law enforcement officers face daily. This Day of National Remembrance is an opportunity for the nation to honor and commemorate the sacrifices made by these brave men and women who selflessly gave their lives to ensure the safety and security of the country. The day is also an opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the courageous uniformed men and women in the line of duty.

Offering flowers and salutations to the heroes of SAF 44 is an important activity that helps people, including the cadets, to appreciate the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers. It is a reminder that being a police officer is not an easy job and requires the highest level of dedication and integrity to uphold the duties and responsibilities of the profession. It is an honorable yet dangerous job that requires officers to stake their lives on the line to ensure the safety and security of the people.

The Day of National Remembrance for the Heroic sacrifice of the SAF 44 reminds law enforcement agencies and the nation as a whole that they should continue to work together to ensure peace and security. The proclamation calls the public to recognize the valiant efforts of the men and women who put their lives on the line for the country's good.

It is an opportunity to show appreciation and respect to those who have sacrificed for the nation. The Day of National Remembrance for the Heroic sacrifice of the SAF 44 is not only a tribute to the fallen heroes but also to the bravery, dedication, and professionalism of all law enforcement officers in the country.

The story of what truly happened during the operation brings so much pain and regret for those who hear it. As cadets, what happened to the 44 Gallant men who sacrificed their lives to give the people and this country peace and security, is indeed an inspiration to strive and become great leaders of our country. Without hesitations and reservations, a leader must perform his duties, even if it means sacrificing his own life - to have the heart to serve our country and people.

The idea of living only once is a misconception. We don’t live just once. We live every day but die only once. Yet, it’s always up to us how we choose our living would be; for the people or for ourselves. It’s always up to us how we choose our death would be; ordinary or heroic. Everyone has the potential to do great things, but only a few heed the call, and those who heed the call, will live infinitely in the memory of the people they choose to live their lives for.
