First, you need to be aware of your talents and flaws if you want people to follow you. You need to be aware of when you can fully rely on your own judgment and conclusions and when you need to seek out the advice and input of others more. Additionally, you must be aware of the kinds of companions you require to complement your strengths and weaknesses. Knowing oneself also means being aware of how others might view you. Being truthful about your habits is necessary for this.
The second reason why self-improvement is so important is because leaders who believe they already know everything are condemned to discover the hard way what they don't know. You can avoid the stagnancy of hubris and stay updated about new and better ways to act by practicing your field or your abilities. It also serves as a fantastic example for those close to you.
Third, humility is a prerequisite for any endeavor at self-knowledge or self-improvement. This principle requires you to be open to the potential that you don't have it all worked out yet and to be honest with yourself. I've been teaching a class on managerial skill development for the past few semesters, and the students that approach the class (or rapidly develop) a feeling of humble curiosity benefit the most from it.
